Success-Fest Conference for Young Adults

Mount Wachusett Community College, Gardner, March 22, 2019. The Department of Mental Health Central Mass Area will host its annual “Success-Fest – Resilience”, which is for young adults, young adult allies, parents, DMH staff, and community providers to recognize and celebrate Resilience.

College Open House for Diverse Learners

Cambridge, December 2nd, 2019. Learn about a local a college-based program for young adults with diverse learning differences. Topics covered will include the program’s dorm living, student activities, and a curriculum focused on career training and independent living for a supported college experience.
* The program focuses on students with a specific range of learning differences and who are highly motivated to become independent. Students typically have these characteristics:

  • IQ: 70s–80s (Average is 78.)
  • Reading Comprehension: Grades 3–7 (Math is often at the lower end of the range.)
  • Qualified for Special Education services
  • Would struggle in a degree-seeking program

Building Bridges: Teen & Adult Social Groups

Quincy, MA, through December 2019. This Inclusion Modified Program is for people ages 13- 22 and ages 22+ with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD), and includes a DSM-5 diagnosis.
* The 13 – 22 social group will help participants recognize, practice, and feel at ease with everyday social encounters while building
confidence, developing friendships, and having fun in a comfortable relaxed atmosphere.
* The 22+ social group goal o is to socialize and strengthen basic life skills while developing friendships, improving communication skills, and practice cooperative interactions. Group members will have the opportunity to utilize these skills through the experience of participating in various activities offed through the Y. Program lead by special education instructors.

The Invisible End of the Spectrum: Older Autistic Adults

Peabody, MA, December 13th, 2019. Older adults on the spectrum are a very real, but little-understood, group. This workshop will review what we know about this population, including recent findings from an international study of 150 people.
Topics include:

  • Reasons for late diagnosis
  • Effects of being diagnosed
  • Stages or “degrees” of autism
  • New research on neuro-diverse romantic relationships
  • Employment trends
  • Deciding whether to disclose diagnosis
  • The needs and challenges of serving this population, and consider how the lessons learned from older adults might be of value to the younger generation.

Participants will be able to:

  • Define obstacles to diagnosing older adults on the spectrum.
  • Describe the unique challenges of older autistic adults.
  • Explain common stages in coming to terms with an autism diagnosis.
  • Define positive steps adults can take when diagnosed with autism.

About the Speaker: Eric Endlich, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and co-author of the book, Older Autistic Adults: The Lost Generation. He helps spectrum teens transition successfully to college, and treats autistic individuals through psychotherapy. He has presented at the Harvard Medical School Continuing Education annual autism course, the Southern Maine Autism Conference, ASPEN-NJ, numerous Asperger/Autism Network (AANE) events, and the Massachusetts Psychological Association annual meeting. He is on the clinical advisory board of AANE and helped establish the Peter M. Friedman Neurodiverse Couples Institute. Finally, Dr. Endlich is an autism dad and identifies as being on the spectrum himself.

Down Syndrome Program Patient Liaison Internship

Boston, Application by December 15th, 2019, with a start date of February 2020.. The Down Syndrome Program at Boston Children’s Hospital is currently seeking an individual with Down syndrome to serve as a Patient Liaison Intern for two half-day clinic sessions each week.
  * The Patient Liaison greets and escorts families, supports clinicians during clinic visits, and performs clerical duties in the clinic. The goal is to provide training to help other individuals with Down syndrome to develop these important job skills, and to provide further employment opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome.
  * In addition, there is a two-year training program – the Patient Liaison Internship –  to expand employment opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome. This is a two-year training position in which individuals with Down syndrome will work with the clinical team and current Patient Liaison to develop job skills in the clinic setting.
Job Responsibilities:
  Help set up rooms for clinician use
  Escort families to clinical rooms
  Share resource materials
  Play with patients and support families during their visits
  Assist program coordinator with clerical duties such as photocopying, faxing, mailing, filing, emailing, etc.
  Prepare and distribute patient materials to providers.
Job Details:
* Candidates must be over the age of 22 to apply.
** This is a two-year internship for training purposes, and will not go beyond two years.  It is a paid, part-time position.

Parents of Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders Support Group

Watertown, MA, December 19th, 2019 – May 21st, 2020. Designed for parents and other adult family members of transition age youth (18-22) who have been diagnosed with Aspergers/Autism or other similar profiles.
* This small group setting limited to 14 participants allows parents to connect with each other and delivers a wealth of information.
* Group will be run by Brenda Dater, Associate Director of the Asperger’s Association of New England, and the author of Parenting Without Panic.
* Brenda is mom to 3 sons, including a college student with an Asperger profile. Brenda joined the staff at AANE in 2007 and has been working with parents for over 20 years. She has completed the Federation for Children with Special Needs parent consultant training and a fellowship with the Institute for Nonprofit Management and Leadership at Tufts University.

Watertown, January 10, 2020. For ages Ages 13 – 22. To gain independence and navigate the life, it is important to be  aware of your surroundings, understand the potential hazards of a given situation, and have the skills to respond effectively when things go wrong.
* Whether using social media, surfing the internet, making a purchase at a store, or traveling in a public place, there is always the risk that we could fall victim to the ill-intentions of others.
* The Self-Defense program will help visually impaired students learn the mental and physical skills needed to identify warning signs, and to respond decisively to defend themselves.

Swansea, MA, through January 27, 2020. Free. Community Autism Resources Presents: PEERS® for Young Adults – A Social skills group for young adults ages 18+ with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
* Openings for 8 individuals that are ready and motivated to:

  • learn how to successfully make and keep lasting friendships.
  • learn how to stay safe while meeting people on social media platforms.
  • learn how to handle bullying. 
  • discuss dating topics such as; letting someone know you like them, going on dates, dating dos and don’ts, and how to handle dating pressure.

The young adults must attend each session with a social coach*. (A social coach can be be anyone that the young adult has a good relationship with and spends a significant amount of time with, i.e.parent, adult sibling, trusted friend, support staff, co-worker, etc…)
* To receive a certificate of completion, they cannot miss more than 3 sessions.
* To start the intake process. The intake is just a simple phone call with the young adult participating and their social coach as well as 3 “pre-tests” that will need to be filled out prior to the first session.

Pre-Employment Program for ages 16-22 Who are Blind or Visually Impaired

Watertown, February 16th – 22rd, 2020. Please inquire about the application deadline for this program. The Pre-Employment Program (PEP) is an intensive one-week residential workshop that equips young adults with the skills necessary for workplace success. PEP offers specific instruction on how to conduct a job interview, what to wear to work and how to disclose a disability to a potential employer is necessary for people whose blindness prevents incidental learning.
Critical skills at a critical age to be covered include:

  • Rigorous preparation for young adults ages 16 to 22 who are blind or visually impaired
  • Real-life perspective from successful leading corporations such as Tufts Health Plan, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, WinterWyman, Wells Fargo and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
  • A chance to tour real worksites including a visit to Google’s Cambridge campus
  • Designed in collaboration with Dr. Karen Wolffe, a renowned international expert on career counseling for people who are blind or visually impaired, and led by Perkins educators

West Somerville Neighborhood School, November 18th, 2019. The Somerville Special Education Parent Advisory Council will present a workshop that will address the transition planning and services required for youth with disabilities ages 14-22.
 * The training will focus on both the transition special education services which prepare youth for employment, independent living and further education and discuss mechanisms to plan for services students may require when they exit special education as well as transition to the adult human service system.
 * Through the use of case examples, parents and professionals will learn strategies that may help students receive important transition services mandated by special education laws.

Adult Family Care (AFC) Information Sessions

Haverhill, MA, October 16th, 2019. Learn more about this possible  opportunity for both you and your loved one. Adult Family Care (AFC) is an Arc program funded by MassHealth that pays either family* or non-family members a monthly tax-free stipend to care for people age 16 and older in a home setting, who cannot live safely on their own.
*Spouses and guardians may not become the AFC Member’s caregiver.

In order to qualify for AFC services, the member:
• Must have MassHealth
• Be 16 years or older and have someone over the age of 18 acting as caregiver (cannot be spouse or guardian)
• Have one or more medical diagnoses
• Require at least supervision with one Activity of Daily Living (ADL), including: bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, or ambulating
• Cannot be left alone in the home setting for more than three hours per day.
Benefits of joining the AFC Program:
• RN’s and Case Managers offer ongoing education, advocacy, and healthcare oversight;
• Non-taxable monetary support according to the needs of the individual cared for
• 24-hour emergency line
• Assistance with accessing community supports
• Bi-lingual (Spanish/Eng.) Case Management is available

Best Buddies Massachusetts offers One-to-One Friendship, Integrated Employment and Leadership Development programs. The main programs are located in Boston, Springfield and Worcester.
One-to-One Friendship Programs BESTBUDDIES® builds one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), through school and community friendship programs that provide socialization opportunities to help erase the invisible line that often separates students or adults with and without IDD. Friendship programs include Best Buddies Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, and e-Buddies.  
Integrated Employment – Jobs Program. BESTBUDDIES® Jobs program secures jobs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), allowing them to earn an income, pay taxes, and continuously and independently support themselves.
Leadership Development Programs. BESTBUDDIES® Leadership Development programs educate and empower people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to become leaders, public speakers and advocates. Best Buddies Ambassadors program educates and empowers people with IDD through training and workshops, to become leaders and public speakers. Support Group For Aging Caregivers On Creating A Letter Of Intent

The Arc of Massachusetts’ future planning support group is for older caregivers in Western, MA who are caring for a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability. The focus of the group will be on creating a letter of intent.
* A letter of intent is a non-legal document that contains important information about the individual with a disability, their family and their desires for the future.
* Learn about future planning and create your letter of intent in a supportive group environment.
* The group will be led by The Arc of Massachusetts graduate social work intern Robbie Rubet, who recently completed a future planning training led by The Arc of the United States, The Arc of Massachusetts and The Institute on Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Workplace Prep Program for Young Adults with Down Syndrome

Boston, June 17th – 21st, 2019. Free. The Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress hosts this to prepare youth with Down syndrome, ages 18 to 26, for the workplace. The program will include a one-week training camp in downtown Boston. Participants will then do a 6-week internship (8-12 hours per week) in an area of interest.
* The 1-week training camp will focus on preparing youth for the workplace. Sessions will build confidence in participants and prepare them for the 6-week internship. Key areas we will cover include:

  • recognizing the skills they have and can bring to the workplace
  • developing a vision for their future
  • communication
  • identifying potential job/career paths
  • interviewing
  • customer service
  • resume writing
  • teamwork

The bootcamp week is free , and participants will be paid during their internships.

“World of Work” for Visual Impairments

Watertown, MA, through August 2nd, 2019. For ages 16 -22 who are visually impaired to have opportunities for employment during the summer.
* Teenagers who are visually impaired often have fewer opportunities for employment during the summer. Employment experience combined with a shared apartment life helps students be more successful in college, in future jobs, in managing dorm life, and in independent living.
* The Outreach Summer Employment Program places high school students in PAID entry-level positions in the greater Watertown area. Students are matched to a job and provided with a job coach to support them, as needed, as they work independently. They tour job sites, do assignments related to the world of work, and participate in evening seminars and classes such as:

  • Sharing of daily work experiences
  • Presenting oneself well in person and on paper
  • Discussions with employed adults who are visually impaired
  • Job seeking skills & Social skills for the workplace
  • Interviewing skills & Completing a resume
  • Keeping a journal
  • Problem solving in a work situation
  • Budgeting weekly paychecks
  • Students live in supervised housing on campus. They are responsible for the management of their living environment, such as grocery shopping, meal preparation, laundry and housekeeping, and planning of recreational activities, with staff support.
  • Students must be independent in their daily living skills.
