WebinarOnline with Berkeley School of Music, Boston, MA, October 19th, 2024. The Berklee Institute for Accessible Arts Education SEL–Music Education professional development opportunity offers both synchronous and asynchronous participation options to learn SEL-informed music education strategies for studio, classroom, early childhood, and ensemble settings.
Level I: introduction and early applications for those who are relatively new to this work or who need to fill in some gaps in their knowledge or experience.
Level II: intermediate and advanced for those with some knowledge and experience in music education for individuals with disabilities.
There is no charge for the study group, but individuals must register by submitting the registration form.
Dates:

  • September 21, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (level I); 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (level II)
  • October 5, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (level I); 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (level II)
  • October 19, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (level I); 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (level II)
  • November 2, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (level I); 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (level II)
  • November 16, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (level I); 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (level II)
  • December 7, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (level I); 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (level II)

The study group will cover topics including the following, and more:

  • Overview of SEL and intersections with music education
  • Neurodiversity and how it affects music learning
  • Universal Design for Learning
  • Mindfulness
  • SEL supports in music education settings
  • Using repertoire to enhance the social-emotional needs of music students
  • Practical strategies to activate SEL and music learning in early childhood music classes, string ensembles, private instrument lessons, and band rehearsals
