Addiction and Our Children - Focusing on Support for Families in MassachusettsWebinar, July 14th, 2022, with a Family Support Agency in Massachusetts. This workshop is designed for social workers, advocates, mental health providers, ABA therapists, behaviorists, and other professionals who want to enhance their understanding of providing care to those affected by ASD and thoughts and behaviors on the suicidal spectrum.
* Vulnerable persons affected by neurodevelopmental disabilities are too often underserved and overlooked when suffering from symptoms on the suicidal spectrum.
* Research suggests that suicide is a leading cause of early death in the autistic community.
* The prevalence of self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal behaviors is significantly elevated in patients diagnosed with ASD compared to the general population and other psychiatric groups.
* In this workshop, we will review recent findings on the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among persons affected by ASD.  This information is followed by a review of known risk factors and assessments, as well as biological, behavioral, and psychosocial treatments.
As a result of this training:

  • Participants will learn how autism spectrum disorder, suicidality, and self-harm interconnect as a public health problem.
  • Participants will learn about the impact of autism spectrum disorder, suicidality and self-harm on the person, their health, environment, and caregivers.
  • Participants will learn about up to date social, biological, psychological and behavioral treatment practices for those with autism spectrum disorder with comorbid suicidality and self-harm.
  • Participants will explore how to integrate suicide and self-harm risk assessment into their practices.
