Webinar, May 6, 2022, with the Special Needs Advocacy Network in Massachusetts. This workshop will help you grow your advocacy tools for parents and advocates of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to ensure access to K-12 education and public accommodations.
* The presentation will include a primer on the main federal and state laws that can be used to advocate for deaf and hard of hearing children in a variety of settings, including K-12; a briefing on the spectrum of d/Deafness and accommodations that may be appropriate for a variety of communication methods and preferences; and a discussion of strategies for the IEP process.
Learning objectives for this workshop:
- Attendees will learn about the deaf and hard of hearing spectrum, culture and identity of the deaf and hard of hearing community, barriers to successful inclusion in schools and the community, and the resources available from MCDHH.
- Attendees will learn about the legal rights of deaf and hard and hearing communities, and the federal and state laws that can be used as advocacy tools for deaf children and adults.

About the Presenter – Caitlin Parton is General Counsel for the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH). She is responsible for providing legal direction and supervision relating to all the regulations, laws, legal decisions, and administrative determinations which impact MCDHH operations. She is also responsible for reviewing and revamping MCDHH programmatic policies, contracts, and interagency service agreements.
