Sensory sensitivities can interfere with education in many ways from having difficulty getting dressed, to standing in lines, to tolerating noisy lunchrooms, to trying to concentrate in a busy classroom. In more serious cases sensory issues can cause anxiety and emotional outbursts. Students who have experienced trauma often have additional challenges of disturbed sensory responses. This webinar will explore various tools and screenings to identify sensory issues and will offer suggestions to help students deal with their sensitivities.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe ways sensory sensitivities can impact success in the school environment.;
2. Describe one formal and three informal tools for evaluation of sensory sensitivities;
3. Explain how a history of trauma can impact sensory responses;
4. Identify three treatment strategies to help with sensory sensitivities.
About the Presenter: Karen Moore, OTR/L worked in mental health at Worcester State Hospital and on the Acute Adult Psychiatric Unit at UMASS Medical Center. Her study of sensory modalities for treatment contributed to her development of the Sensory Connection Program and the publication of three books: The SCP Activities for Mental Health Treatment , The SCP Self-Regulation Workbook , and The SCP Curriculum for Self-Regulation. Karen has provided training on the use of sensory modalities to enhance Crisis Intervention and Restraint and Seclusion Reduction initiatives as well as for Trauma Informed Care.
