Circles of Support for Families with Special Needs

Circles of Support Workshop for families with special needs in Massachustts

Webinar, March 31st, with a family support center in the Peabody, MA, communities. Guest Speaker Cheryl Ryan Chan is a person-centered practitioner helping individuals & families identify next steps to success as they face transitions, and teaching organizations and large groups how to steward the humanity of those they support.

  • Cheryl leads individuals and families to successful futures using natural and systems supports in harmony, while focusing on the dreams and visions of the person and honoring those throughout the process .
  • Cheryl is also known to our Massachusetts families as the driving force behind “Nicky ’s Law ” , an act to increase the safety of disabled individuals living in group homes in Massachusetts resulting in creation of a Disability Abuse Registry.

College Preparation Mentoring For High School Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder

School teen read collegeVirtual Program for Spring 2021. UMass Lowell’s online Horizons online college preparation mentoring program is a mentoring program for high-school juniors or seniors on the autism spectrum who plan to go to college.
* Beginning week of March 1st 2021.
* High school students meet online once a week for an hour for 7-weeks one-on-one with a trained mentor – a trained UMass Lowell upperclassman –The Horizons curriculum covers topics such as:

  • What will a typical day at college look like
  • Navigating through your major
  • Identifying and accessing supports on campus
  • Choosing classes
  • What to bring to college
  • Finances
  • Social side of university;
  • Time management and organization strategies
  • Reducing stress and self-care, etc.

The program includes a virtual campus tour and watching an online lecture.
*  Students do not need to be planning to attend UMass Lowell.
* There is a $75 fee for the Horizons program and scholarships are available for those who cannot afford the fee.

Webinar: Reforming Day Hab in Massachusetts

Webinar, September 16th, 2020, with the Arc of Massachusetts. Over the last two years, the Disability Law Center (DLC) has been working to improve community integration access for individuals attending Day Habilitation Centers across Massachusetts.
* As part of this system reform, DLC accessed Day Habilitation Centers across Massachusetts to learn about current practices, researched best practice from across the country, identified system barriers, and engaged in conversation with policy makers.

There will be ½-Hour Workshops on:

• Eligibility for MA Rehabilitation Commission and Department of Developmental Services
• Working While Collecting SSI & SSDI Benefits

Be.You.tiful Empowering Girls, Breaking Barriers & Building friendships

World of Careers Disability Workshop Boston MABoston Public Library, Copley Square, November 18, 2017. Girls in high school who are blind or low vision and girls without disabilities are invited to participate in a program to explore gender, ethnicity and visual impairment, how it impacts one’s relationship with the self and others, and one’s ability to navigate social and academic success in school and beyond.
The first session is on Saturday November 18 at the BPL in Copley Square in Boston. This program meets once a month for three months.
By the end of the program the students will:
Get to know each other
Have tips and strategies which can be used to succeed academically and socially
Be able to identify Healthy friendships and relationships and
Resources on where to turn to when it feels like it is all going wrong.
