The Arc of Massachusetts Educational Series for Aging Caregivers of Individuals with Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities will focus on topics of interest to families and caregivers, including overviews of legal and financial planning, medical issues and supports for individuals with disabilities as they age, Options Counseling and various available community supports.
Tuesday, October 18: Special Needs Legal & Estate Planning with Karen Mariscal, Esq.
* Karen Mariscal, Esq. is a special needs estate planner, focusing on special needs trusts, guardianship, and government benefits advocacy.
* She also is the mother of a 30-year-old son with autism and intellectual disability. She is a graduate of Indiana University and the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. She currently chairs the Steering Committee for The Arc of Massachusetts.
Attorney Mariscal will discuss Special Needs Trusts and how they can be incorporated into your estate plan. She will explain how a Trust works, and why a Special Needs Trust is different from a regular Trust.
* She will help you think about how to choose the right Trustee and whether you should include a Memorandum of Intent with your Estate Plan. She will also review public benefits, Guardianship and alternatives.
* There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
