Depression and Down Syndrome workshop for Families in Massachusetts (3)Webinar, March 13th, 2025, with Bridgewell of Peabody, MA. Participants will delve into the impact of sexual trauma on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) from both the perspectives of victims and, in some cases, perpetrators. Participants will explore best practices in educating survivors about healthy sexuality, sexual development, and fostering supportive environments for healing. This approach will equip participants with the tools and understanding necessary to provide sexuality education that is both healing and empowering for individuals with I/DD who have experienced sexual trauma.
Objectives:

  • Impact of Sexual Abuse on Sexual Development
  • Messages for Healing and Recovery.
  • Teaching Healthy Sexuality for Future Relationships.
  • Participants will apply these messages and concepts to real-world scenarios through case studies, enhancing their ability to be effective and supportive educators or caregivers.

About the Speakers:

  • Katherine McLaughlin, M.Ed., AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator, is the Founder, CEO and Lead Trainer for Elevatus Training. She is the author of, Sexuality Education for People with Developmental Disabilities curriculum, and developed two online courses: Developmental Disability and Sexuality 101 for professionals and Talking to Your Kids: Developmental Disabilities and Sexuality for parents.
  • Karyn Harvey, has her Ph.D. in Applied Developmental Psychology and has written “Positive Identity Development, Trauma –Informed Behavioral Interventions and Trauma and Healing”. Her practice focses on  therapy with people with intellectual disabilities.
