Accessible Beaches/Beach Wheelchairs in Massachusetts. Find beach mats to the water, sand beach wheelchairs and floating beach wheelchairs in Massachusetts state parks with the DCR Universal Access Program. Contact the beach or park in advance to reserve a beach wheelchair.
* You must bring your own Coast Guard certified personal flotation device (PFD) to use a floating beach wheelchair.
* You will also see a few parks that have the chairs for use on trails, and pools or spray decks that have chairs for use in the water.
* Free – BUT bring your own transfer help. The chairs have large balloon tires, you will need to bring someone to push you.
* There are two types of beach wheelchairs at DCR beaches. Floating Chairs, and Sand and sunbathing beach wheelchairs that are made of PVC pipe. These chairs offer a seat belt, a footrest, a beach umbrella holder, and a movable arm for transfer. This style of chair do not float and can’t enter the water.
