Lexington, MA, January 17th, 2019. Photojournalist Dan Habib’s award-winning documentary film, Including Samuel, is about his son Samuel, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It chronicles the Habib family’s efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives. It includes his family’s hopes and struggles, plus the experiences of four other individuals with disabilities and their families. It effectively captures the cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion.
* Discussion moderator Dr. Joe Petner’s had a career in public education, and recently retired from his positions as Education Program Director, Adjunct Faculty at Lesley University, Wheelock College, and the Boston Teacher Residency Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He also collaborated with filmmaker Dan Habib on “Including Samuel.”
* Dr. Petner is currently working with the MA Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education in the role of a support facilitator with the Statewide System of Support in the Greater Boston Region. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Federation for Children with Special Needs and is an Intergenerational Math Tutor for the Cambridge School Volunteers.
