"Determined, argumentative, and/or pugnacious."
That's WordReference.com's "North American informal" definition of the word scrappy. It also greatly describes the attitude parents and advocates will have to have in 2011 to fight back against any future disability budget cuts in Massachusetts.
Currently the disability community doesn't have strong unions or old-school political nepotism and ties to throw some weight around to fight proposed cuts.
What they do have are family members in desperate need of a proper education and job prospects, and daily battles to get proper healthcare and respite.
Thankfully all this goes on the back burner a bit while we enjoy the holidays and try to relax. But when the holidays end, we take a breath and get back to business.
Until then, I wish you all peace, health, happiness, and a Scrappy New Year.
Sharon Marie
