Nicky’s Law is Close to Happening

October 23, 2019 by Sharon Marie

I’m going to quote Cheryl Ryan Chan, the force behind the push for Nicky’s  Law… “The phone lines are open at the Statehouse. Call your Representative! Here’s a script: “Good morning, my name is < > and I live in < town>. I’m calling to ask Representative < > to contact the Members of the House Ways and Means Committee and urge them to push Nicky’s Law, House Bill 4074, through quickly; AND I’m asking the Representative to vote yes on this bill when it gets to the floor for vote.”
You can continue if you want, with your own story and/or a further appeal about why this is so important.
You are also welcome to email your Representative. To find out who yours is, go to: https://malegislature.gov/search/findmylegislator
One last thing – try to reach out to your Senator and send them a quick message of thanks for voting yes to Nickys Law last week!
 Thank you everyone! #nickyslaw”
Here is the link to the Nicky’s Law Facebook Page www.facebook.com/groups/284125382009278/

Keep Pushing Nicky’s Law

June 19, 2019 by Sharon Marie

Although Nicky’s law is winding through the legislative process (again), we still are seeing news story headlines such as:

• Residents Cowered While Workers at a Group Home Smacked and Pushed Them
• DLC Finds Abuse & Neglect at Tri-County Schools in Easthampton
• A Sister’s Quest to End Sexual Abuse of the Severely Disabled
• Former Caretaker Accused of Abusing Disabled Adults at 2 Pennsylvania Group Homes
• Ex-Group Home Workers Accused of Battering, Abusing Nonverbal Resident

For everyone concerned about this horrific and ongoing problem, I urge you to join the Nicky’s law Facebook Page. There you will find updates on where the law is in the enactment process, plus speeches and opinions from Cheryl Ryan Chan, and the rest of the movers and shakers getting this law to fruition.

To learn why Cheryl became the force behind this movement, take a moment to read the heart wrenching speech she gave in April at the AFAM Advocacy Day detailing her own child’s horrific experience.

To read the full statement on why the law originally did not pass, and the one organization responsible for sabotaging it (Committee on Public Counsel Services (CPCS), visit the Arc of Massachusetts Statement on Nicky’s Law, A Registry for People Who Have Committed Abuse.

Our lesson? No matter how old our special-needs child is or where they live, we must remain diligent. But we don’t live forever and caring people must be put in place. And things must change.

    More on Nicky’s Law

March 28, 2019 by Sharon Marie

There is some good news for those following the efforts of advocates working hard to make the anti-abuse Nicky’s Law happen.

The proposed law, which has been winding through the legislative process with the goal of protecting persons with intellectual or developmental disability from abuse, has been assigned new bill numbers.

In addition, the bill has been assigned to the Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities Committee.

This is encouraging to hear. Hopefully these new efforts will circumvent the previous roadblock to what should have been a slam dunk law enactment.

    * To read the full statement on why the law originally did not pass, and the one organization responsible for sabotaging it, visit the Arc of Massachusetts Statement on Nicky’s Law, A Registry for People Who Have Committed Abuse.
    * For those of you who would like to get the latest updates on where Nicky’s Law is in the legislative process, you can join the Nicky’s Law public Facebook Page www.facebook.com/groups/284125382009278/
    * For a little more history on the subject, here is link to my previous blog about the law not being passed on the day it was sabotaged.http://www.spedchildmass.com/2018/08/07/protecting-our-loved-ones/

Thank you again to Leo Sarkissian and Maura Sullivan of the Arc of Massachusetts, and especially Cheryl Ryan Chan for working their hearts out to protect our loved ones.
