Get to the Root of ADD/ADHD and Executive Function: June 25th - Bedford Free Library, July 11th - Beverly Public Library, & July 24th - Lincoln Public Library, all at 7:00pm. These workshops are sponsored by the Foundation for Wellness professionals, a non-profit, volunteer organization that promotes wellness and disease prevention programs. The speaker, Psychologist Dr. Jolene Ross, will cover executive functioning skills and how they can be improved, such as organization, planning, initiation, emotional control, completing tasks, transitions, working memory, and other high order brain functions. Think Differently - A New Approach for Understanding & Helping Children with Behavioral Challenges, April 30th, 2013, 7 - 9 p.m., Medford, MA. Speaker Dr. Larry Epstein, Director of School-Based Services at Think:Kids, will discuss their take on behavioral challenges that result from a lack of crucial thinking skills such as problem solving, frustration tolerance and flexibility. This workshop will help you shift your thinking and approach to foster positive relationships with your children/students and encourage growth in areas of self-regulation, communication and problem solving. Dr. Epstein is also an Assistant in Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at MGH and a Clinical Instructor in Psychology the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and is a nationally certified bullying prevention trainer. The Newton/Metrowest CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) will host Matt Reid, a certified ADHD coach, ICF certified life coach, professional organizer, speaker, and teacher with ADHD. Matt's presentation will be on overall ADHD management for your child and/or teen, understanding how the ADHD brain is different from the "neurotypical" brain, positive parenting techniques that work for ADHD kids, strategies to overcome executive dysfunction, and how to create an ADHD friendly life for your children, teen, and young adults. Suspension, Expulsion, and Disability: Using Positive School Discipline to Keep Kids in School, November 8, 2012, 7 - 9 p.m., Dracut. Speaker Dr. Doreen Arcus, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, researches the development of children with disabilities through school transitions, the beliefs of educators about these children, the experience of parents in negotiating this development, and, in partnership with the MA Department of Children and Families, on issues related to the wellbeing of children in foster care.. Dr. Arcus has served on the Massachusetts Special Advisory Council, consulted with school districts, and conducted public awareness programs on issues related to foster care.. Finding the Buried Treasure in ADD, with Dr. Ned Hallowell: October 29th, 2012, 7 p.m., RMHS Endslow Performing Arts Center, Reading. Dr. Ned Hallowell, author of Driven to Distraction, Superparenting for ADD, and When You Worry About the Child You Love, will speak about how to master the power of ADD while avoiding its pitfalls. Author Ross Greene: Advanced Training for Parents - Plan B in Depth: October 13th, 2012, 8:30 A.M. - 12:30 P.M., Bedford, MA. Dr. Greene will discuss Plan B in depth of the collaborative problem solving method (CPS) approach to dealing with and managing challenging behavior in children and teens. This training is for parents, grandparents, step-parents, and foster parents who have some existing familiarity with the CPS model. Dr. Greene will cover specific aspects of the CPS model Plan B in detail, as well as other aspects of Collaborative Problem Solving and will be open to questions, interaction, and discussion. Children ages 6-11 with ADHD and their parents needed to participate in the Kids' Appetite & Attention (KAppA) research study. The KAppA Study is a pilot study to better understand the eating patterns and family mealtimes of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), ages 6-11 years. Includes weighing and measurements, and questionnaires on eating. The study is located at the UMass Medical School/E.K. Shriver Center in Waltham, MA and consists of 1 visit.
